Along with iron oxide, black Manganese pigments were found on cave writings 17,000 years ago. In the 1970s, there was lots of excitement about the riches to be made collecting manganese nodules from deep in the ocean. The billionaire Howard Hughes set off a Manganese rush by commissioning a special called The Hughes Glomar Explorer.
Fun Fact: The Manganese rush was a setup to cover the CIA while they probed the northwest ocean floor of Hawaii to find a Russian submarine the K-129.
